Firmware updates for the Tide and Weather Display

The Tide and Weather Display device’s functionality and programs (software) are stored in a firmware file on the device. The device is updated by replacing the firmware file. Starting with Version 2.2.0 UNI, the display can be updated using the SD card.

Download the update file (below) for your screen size. The files are named TWU_firmware_xx_nnn.zip, where xx stands for the display type (CY for 2.8 inch and 70 for 7 and 5 inch displays) and nnn stands for the version number (221 for 2.2.1). The files are downloaded as ZIP files to make them smaller and make downloading easier.

Follow these steps to install the new version:

• Remove the SD card from your device.
• Download the file for your screen size from the website. (On Windows, downloaded files are usually saved in the Download directory.)
• Unzip the file on your computer. To unzip it, you usually just double-click on the file. On most computers, that automatically opens it and shows you what’s inside. You can then drag those contents to a new location, like your desktop or documents folder. On phones or tablets, you might need an app like "Files" or a special unzipping app. And if the file doesn’t open with a click, there are free programs like WinZip, 7-Zip, or The Unarchiver that can help.
• The ZIP file contains the firmware file ending in .bin.
• Copy it to the root directory of your device’s SD card.
• Insert the SD into your device.
• Power cycle the device.
• Do not power cycle the device until the update process is finished! This is important, as an interrupted update will render your device unusable.
• On starting up, your device detects the presence of the update file and performs a few checks to determine the validity of the file.
• The update is then performed by copying the new firmware to the memory of the device, replacing the old version. The update takes about one minute.
• The device will then automatically restart and launch the new version if the update is successful. If there was an error, the device will display the error and also write it to the SD card in the updates.txt file. In this case it will keep the old version on the device.
• After a successful update, the device will rename the firmware file on the SD card to SUCCESS_ TWU_firmware_xx_nnn.bin. Don’t worry about the config file on your SD card, it will not be changed in the process and all your settings remain.
• Enjoy the new version!
